funky friday
This week has taken the turn of being very tiring for me. I've managed a lot of sleeping amongst other things.Visitors have popped in and out during the week and although they have noticed a gradual improvement . I am still on the very weak side of fit.
http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Aboutcancer
This is probably the hardest of the side effects to accept. I have turned into an old man very quickly and need Maria's help for even the most simple of things. For Example, If I climb the stairs I need a nap for an hour. So a big thanks here to Maria and the other "helpers" , I couldn't do this (day to day), without you.
My good friend Tim Arrived Friday lunchtime and between him and Maria, my favourite lunch was prepared. Mince, Mashed Potato, Mashed Swede and Savoy cabbage. Maria had to attend an induction at Holbrook Gym (? ), So me and Tim had first Pickings and they were Lush! Well done guys!
The rest of the day was a bit quiet on the visitor front but there you go.
I fell asleep on the sofa but left it for a good night's sleep in bed where hopefully i can build up a bit of strength.

Suck sess!
Well this was the best time yet. Maria obtained a ticket at 0831 just after opening, whilst I waited in the car. I was seen at 0920 and we were back indoors by 0945.
I feel so tired all I could do was have a nap.
Maria was out lunchtime having lunch with an ex colleague and bezzy chum. She was then popping down to Hythe, so i was left to my own devices for most of the day.
Debbie popped in lunchtime for a cuppa and to catch up on the latest gossip, and all is well in the universe.
The evening was more of the same although we became engrossed in watching 4 shows back to back featuring Gordon Ramsay in Hells Kitchen USA and we didn't retire until 0100.
None so deaf as those who will not hear eh? Typical American.
Good stuff!

Sucky Sucky
An early start on today's post, the expected highlight being a blood test at Haslar, later this morning.
Its a bit stressful as it's so well attended. there are loads of people and you take a ticket from the wall and wait your turn. It has a big queue on opening at 0830, just like the sales at Harrods or something, with everybody rushing in and scrambling for a ticket. and it really does my brain in.
Obviously it puts the staff under pressure too, which can't be good?

The wait is about an hour and a half from taking your ticket, during which I normally go outside for a walk, with my companion, or sit in the grounds, which are lovely by the way.
I believe that the consultant is thinking of changing my consultative appointments to Tuesdays so that if there are any problems like the need for a transfusion then they can be addressed before chemo delivery on Thursday.

Out for lunch
A quiet day by your standards but quite significant by mine. let me explain:
Our good friends Ian and Paula arrived from deepest Dorset and we all went out for lunch to Leonard's.
http://www.theseahorsepubgosport.co.uk/
This was the second time in the last week or so that I had felt well enough to go out, the first being last night with Maria to Cafe Garlic in Gosport.
http://solentsites.co.uk/hampshire_tourist_information/restaurants_pubs.html
So obviously things are improving as regards my reaction to the effects of the chemo. in line with this I feel OK too.
The evening provided some old friends visiting - Margaret and Roger and it was lovely to see them. Now for the spooky part:
They are also mutual friends of Ian and Paula, who visited earlier, as well as Roger being an old work colleague of my bezzy chum Kevin who was also visiting at the time.
It's a small old world at times innit?

Blood and and No Miss Steak
Here's a lovely story about what can happen.

My cousin, who is a blog follower, read about my misfortunes earlier in the month when I ended up in Hospital and needed a transfusion of platelets.
Now my blood group is B Rh Pos which is quite rare which also was a reason for my receipt of a blood product, taking its time in preparation.
She was so struck by all of this that she went went and donated "a pint" at one of the NHS Sessions, on the message of one out and one in. Isn't that wonderful?
http://www.blood.co.uk/
I now it doesn't match all the young girls going and getting their smear tests done (because of Jade), but what a gesture nonetheless eh?
Giving blood, and thus being a donor is very easy, in fact until recently I have been one myself. So to all of you bloggers who donate blood, or blood products like platelets, well done! To those who are considering doing it please chase it up its a very laudable cause, and helps all of our community.
http://www.blood.co.uk/SessionSearcher/search.aspx
All in all I feel very humble and start to realise the full implications of being a donor and recipient.
Please give it some serious thought bloggers!

Sheik yer booty

Sunday morning is now as everyone knows car booty season, and across the way from me at Bridgemary Community School is one of the biggest in the area.
http://www.bridgemary.hants.sch.uk/
Maria and my brothers duly attended in the glorious Hampshire sunshine.
I myself was unable to as this time the chemo has attacked my white cells . http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=314
They are quite low and I cannot risk any infection.
http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Cancertype
Besides which I still feel very tired regardless. So a pleasant morning with the papers and a reflection on last nights beer fest for my brothers.
Lunchtime saw them on the great road north and Maria and I started to get back to normal.
Its the usual mantra with visitors isn't it? - lovely to see 'em (and it was!) and lovely to see 'em leave.
Nice lazy afternoon followed and early to bed.

Sporty Saturday
My day begins with anti sickness for me as I'm starting to feel a bit spewy. slept most of the morning after a breakfast of sausage and bacon, lush!. The afternoon consisted of watching rugby interspersed with latest scores from the premier league.
Play up Pompey! and play up they did! well done boys.

Sadly Middlesbrough didn't rise to the challenge and are now in the mire.

The rugger was fantastic and my prediction for the grand slam came true. I fancied them from the beginning and was told don't be daft it'll be Wales or France But there you are! God bless Ireland!
Physically I am knackered and have pent the day interspersed with periods of sleep, but hey, that's Chemo for you!

Sorry about the absence but all is OK.
It has now been two months since i was diagnosed.

This time the chemo has affected my whiter blood cells ie the ones that fight infections, so more quarantine if you have the sniffles or anything like it.

I awoke up early Friday morning and felt well well enough to assist Maria in an early shopping visit to ASDA. Home afterwards to have a nap and await the arrival of my brothers Mark and Keith who are visiting for the week end. I' m really looking forward to seeing them and hope the feeling is mutual.

What a difference a nap makes
I awoke with new feelings in my mouth. No longer did the yeast spots from the Thrush, form a version of braille within my mouth but were starting to become on the way out - hooray!
Good Taste is everything surely! Ask Noel Coward
http://www.noelcoward.net/
Although I'm still tired etc. I feel good and know that I will improve as well. my butt and giblets feel better and more relaxed so that's all ok then.
The senna I had been taking was, although natural, too raw and aggressive for me, and gave me gripes and you had to go, when you had to go, if you see what I mean. (Hence the new A**hole)
Still all of that is now behind me allegedly.
talk soon bloggers i must get some more sleep as I've a date with Chemo again later today
Love you all.

Weak and wobbly
A very short instalment for today I'm afraid.
Wow! The chemo has rally hit me for six this time.
Today has run along the lines of sleep, wake, loo, drink, and repeat.
My lower legs especially feel very weak and it is all I can do to climb the stairs.
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/chemo-side-effects
No visitors today, they must all be at the last day of the DFS Sale or something, mind you as I've said, I would not be any decent company for them.
http://www.dfs.co.uk/
I've snacked today on biscuits, yoghurt, and ice cream as my mouth is very sore.
I managed some soup for my tea/supper and I seem to have a little more energy, but still very tired.

The effects of chemo
Today is Saturday and i thought i would share my experience of this session's chemo.
Generally I feel incredibly weak, wobbly and tired this time , weird eh? the skin is starting to fall off the inside of my mouth again so it's time for the yoghurt again.
I had a busy day as quite a few people turned up it being Saturday. Being tired meant that I couldn't give them my best attention, and apologise here for that.
The task in the background for me and Maria was to write (Thank the lord for PC Printing) and send invites for our wedding and party etc.
I'm on my own for this evening, as Maria has gone to Hythe to see her granddaughter Kira appearing in a show - fantastic!
Please don't be offended if you don't get one as we are limited on numbers etc., everywhere we go. It doesn't mean we don't love you, it's just the way it is.

Late afternoon saw me in bed again, hot and bothered.
Constipation has set in and I have possibly OD'd on Dulco Ease. We shall see; I shall either turn Japanese, or maybe I shall disappear in an enormous fart!
http://www.heptune.com/farts.html
I know this might be too much information for some but hey look at the title of this post.
So here's the joke:

Chemo day
As the title suggests I received more chemo today in the shape of Gemcitabine and Carboplatin.
I aslo saw the consultant who was reasonably pleased with my position, notwithstanding the trip to hospital last week.
I have lost a further 10 pounds over the last three weeks, although she is not that concerned as the weight loss is gradual. I now weigh 98.4 Kg or 15 and a half Stone, and I still don't recommend this course as a dietary option.
I feel ok after chemo as the effects don't really kick in for a couple of days, albeit I feel tired , (no change there then).
http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=176
I must also mentiom yesterday for all my smoking pals in fleetlands as it was "National No Smoking day". I guess every body missed it as they were outside having a fag. Ha Ha!
http://www.nosmokingday.org.uk/
On a serious note chaps my condition is almost certainly due to smoking, so think on. I am not a preacher, and all I say is, do what you feel is right for you.

Welcome to my life for Wednesday 11th.
It started early as Maria and I had an appointment with the Registrar at Fareham Registry Office at 0900.
All went well and the wedding is now booked for 1200 on Saturday 11th April 2009, (Easter Saturday)and will be a small family affair. However gone are the days of 7 shillings and sixpence : The costs comprised an admin fee of £25, followed by a booking fee of £30 each, with a final cost for the actual ceremony of £153.50 - a grand total of £228.50 - wow!
We then went to the jewellers in Havant to finalise our choice of wedding rings - again all went well, mine is 18ct and Maria's is 22ct.
Next stop was to book the restaurant for lunch after the ceremony, again all went well and we were able to book all of our guests in with no bother.
We have a hall booked for the evening bash so everything is just about done and dusted.
To tell you the truth we were beginning to think that we were in a parallel universe as everything is going so swimmingly! Maybe people haven't realised that it is Easter weekend , or perhaps its part of the credit crunch where people are tightening their belts.
Whatever - it has worked in our favour so good for us!

Testing Testing!
It's back to the routine and today is bloods at Haslar. (Tuesdays Bloods, Thursdays Chemo).
My good friend Kevin did the honours as Chaffeur.
The place was mobbed as usual and it was draw a ticket and wait. Maria meanwhile, had gone to investigate Gosport Market with Charlotte and young Jack.
http://www.discovergosport.co.uk/
Me and Kevin spent a good hour and a half talking abut everything and nothing in particular and it was nice to chill out together. this was brought to a close by my number advancing to the front of the list and a sample being taken, which in turn was followed by a hasty retreat to Castle Tinkler; all sorted!
Maria and Charlie arrived mid afternoon cock a hoop with their purchase in gosport Market, so a good day was had by all. Lunch, cooked by me and Maria, was pasta with salami and zucchini, and very nice it was too!

It was very much the end of an era in that my good friend and neighbour Debbie moved to a new place.
She has exchanged with a lady who had a smaller house; good sense when you think about it as there is less house to heat and decorate etc.
She hasn't gone far, (near the church in Gregson Avenue,) and has threatened to visit me still (only joking). We have been neighbours and friends for over 15 years and I shall miss her, but at the same time wish her all my very best wishes for life in her new home.

Quiet Times
What do you call a penguin in the desert?
Lost - geddit?
A quiet day for all. Maria had business in Hythe which took up most of her day, so I was left holding the fort.
Regarding entertainment, thank the lord for the Jeremy Kyle Show - absolutely chavtastic! http://chavstest.com/
I used to think "Only in America" but we are now emulating that which has gone before "Jerry! Jerry!". This is the Britain we have voted for, or have allowed to happen (rare splash of social comment).
My good pal Richard turned up from Angmering for the afternoon, and I also had a visit from my pal Maggie and my boy Wayne. Usual deal: It was wonderful to see them and good to catch up on things. Maria arrived back late afternoon with Daisy dog, and rustled up the last of the mince for my tea.
It was as lush as the first lot and I ate it with relish. My mouth has healed up quite a bit, and my taste buds are starting to operate again. So it tasted even better than yesterday, mind you things like that always do don't they?
http://kidshealth.org/kid/talk/qa/taste_buds.html
On a physical note , I tentatively blew my nose and was delighted to observe no trace of the sanguine. I am starting to heal which can only be a good thing.

Blood and and No Mis Steak
Yes its me, back and feeling quite a bit better than I have been of late. However I intend to take the consultant's advice and take things easy, as I still feel quite fragile.
Last weeks weeks happenings unnerved me a little bit but at the same time fascinated me.
For example, I can understand the platelets (in my blood getting zapped by the chemo, by why not the white cells and the haemoglobin's as well; weird eh?http://anthro.palomar.edu/blood/blood_components.htm
This picture shows a red cell, a platelet, and a white cell, or if you want to be scientific: a erythrocyte (left), thrombocyte(centre), and leukocyte (right)
You can't use a pump to get platelets in to the bloodstream as it breaks of all of the protuberances (bits) which makes them useless, so it has to go in purely under gravity in order to be effective.
My pill regime is also back to where it was and all of this will provide grist to the mill of my consultant whom I shall next meet on Thursday prior to chemo.
I've started eating extra red meat again, to support production of these little rascals and today it was rib eye steak's turn for the platter, and very nice it was too.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rib_eye
As for the taking it easy, difficult though it is for me I will do it as i understand where the medicos are coming from. Part of this is the fact that I intend to begin watching videos again. There are loads of films I havent seen, so it should be good.

Chillin' Out
just a quick note about yesterday.
Maria and I spent the whole day just chillin, and it was just what the doctor ordered. We had a very lazy day with a few visitors sprinkled in.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnos
I spent a lot of the day sleeping, but it interspersed well with their attendance, and as i said it was lovely to see them. They were jolly good company and made for an enjoyable afternoon.
Later in the day Maria cooked Mince and Tatties and it was lush, with yours truly going back for seconds.

Sleepy Saturday

"Mummy Mummy, whats a vampire?
"Shadddup, and eat your soup before it clots!"
I have spent most of today sleeping as I made the decision early on to be a model patient and do whatever the medicos asked of me. I had a little nosebleed in the morning which took absolutely ages to stop. I thought "oh no not again, deja vu!" but stop it did (thankfully)
http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Treatments/Chemotherapy/Sideeffects/Possibleside-effects
It gave me and Maria a curt reminder of the past few days, and how fast things can move and situations change. The seriousness of the situations we may find ourselves in means that we didn't have time to tell every one what had been going on (however close they might be in our circle). It doesn't mean we don't love you, its just the way it is.
It also gave me pause for thought about blood donation and what other products are made form the donated blood. Check out the platelets link below:http://www.blood.co.uk/pages/platelets.html
As most guys thought I was still in Hospital, we could also use this opportunity to catch upon our sleep as we were both exhausted.
We both had a kip in the day cabin at home, and it was just what the doctor ordered.
Having woke refreshed, we then told our news to most people who call us regular, and then to those who call us Steve and Maria (boom boom!)
We had a quiet night in in front of the telly and then early to bed.

Close Call
The cavalry won and the early hours of Thursday morning saw me admitted to St Mary's (Exton 3) where my situation was quite grave. I was examined and the opinion was that I had an infection with other symptoms exacerbating the original situation.Thursday, 5 March 2009
I dont think it's a gold brick
On a more serious note, bedtime saw me have coughing fit resulting in me possibly ripping something in the lung area. Since lying down, I have been coughing up the claret for a couple of hours now as whatever it is is refusing to stop bleeding (weeping).
http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Treatments/Chemotherapy/Sideeffects/Possibleside-effects#2857e-effects#2857
http://www.cancerbackup.org.uk/Treatments/Supportivetherapies/Platelettransfusions
Obviously I have got up and although the rate is reducing, over time, my ability "to clot" has been impaired by the Chemo, and I am waiting to see what happens before I call in the cavalry.
I am am taking Codeine Linctus which will inhibit my cough and thus reduce any aggravation of the situation.
This is a sharp reminder of how quickly my situation can deteriorate.
Whilst we are on the subject of bodily impairment chemo also kills and reduces the ability of my immune system to carry out its normal function.
http://www.chemotherapy.com/side_effects/side_effects.jsp
So should any of you be planning a visit (and it will be lovely to see you, but ring first), be aware of the risks of infection for me, as something small to you could prove fatal to me
I have extra requirements for limitations on my diet in that I cannot eat Soft or Blue cheese , eggs must be fully cooked and no shellfish etc . Yes just like during pregnancy to remove the risk of infection.
see you soon Bloggers

Today saw our visitors return to the Kingdom of Fife.

Meanwhile Maria and I travelled to Bournemouth County Court to obtain a document required by her in order to progress with our wedding plans. (Yes! We are getting Married but have yet to set a date). It was a cinch and cost a fiver (fantastic service and value). Whilst down that way we tootled over to Blandford to see our good friends Ian and Paula. Unfortunately I had a weary on and ran straight into the arms of Morpheus for a couple of hours.
We drove home for tea time where i was able to address my e mails at last. I have received several from people both near and far, who have heard of my condition throught the grapevine and have been very supportive in their messages to me. I love you guys!

Suffice to say two of our very good friends and their wives travelled down for the evening, (stopping with me and Maria since Sunday evening).

The Rest of the day
Monday, 2 March 2009
Hooray Hooray I've made it to today!
Lazy Sunday Afternoon
The day passed quite peacefully with a steady stream of visitors .
First was Karl and Caroline with their we'ans Hannah and Lucy. In such a sweet gesture Hannah who's 3 when told of my condition said she wanted to kiss me on the chest where it was poorly, so that I would be OK. This she proceded to do and was a real "magic moment" for all, and a tear jerker for me. Such a wee scone! Karl did a couple of jobs fo me whilst here, and was greatly appreciated.
Next was Charlotte who literally just popped in and said "Hello" as she's still a bit sniffly (Good Attitude to infection).
Carol was next with a congratulations card, llovely.
This visit was followed by a suprise visit from Sam and Scott which made Maria's day, they are such good company and is was wonderful to see them.
They went mid-afternoon and were replaced by Tim, Fiona, and Phoebe, who were on the way back from shopping for Phoebe's impending trip to OZ - Nice one Pheebs! Again they were very good company and did a couple of jobs for me - Thanks guys.

Last of the day was my pal Kevin and his daughter Carolanne. Here's an embarrassing photo of her, in Makro.
All in all a lovely day.
Must fly Bloggers as I've a big day tomorrow (guess what!)

Yes we've arrived at St David's day, the patron Saint of Welsh Wales, and a special hello to the likes of Gareth, and Rodders and all of the others in Fleetlands, who hail from that part of the UK.
