Sorry for the delay in posting this, but I finally have all the details fo you. Steve will be arriving home at 10am on September 1st, so anyone wishing to pay their last respects to Steve can do so on that day. The coffin will be open and will remain so until the morning of the funeral.

Hi followers,

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. This is Maria writing on behalf of Steve.

Steve is now lavishing luxuriously in a hospital bed at home and has bed baths twice daily from young girlies from the Blue Bird Care Agency, and very good they are too, according to the patient!!!!

He is also having daily visits from the Community Nurses and Macmillan Nurses. http://www.macmillan.org.uk/

Steve has now decided not to continue with any further treatment, but is receiving palliative care at home to make him comfortable.

Hi Blogsters,

How wrong can you be sometimes. Another Big Poo came as I was just about to leave for Haslar - how embarrassing. Adult human beings have control - its what separates us from the animals apparently. Those in the house were very understanding and quite nonchalant about the whole event - how kind!

Cleaned up It was off to Haslar for 2 units of the claret. Meanwhile Maria and Jason would field the carpet fitters. j think I got the best end of the deal. the blood went in OK and i felt a difference for the better, although still tired.

On arrival home the house looked fantastic and truly had the wow factor!Expensive - but well worth it. checked out the small sofa for z's and it was full.

feeling a bit maudlin at present due to the events of the past couple of days. Its funny when one from the generation before goes as it reminds you of how far behind them you are, in this case 18 years. Quite sobering!
Charlotte has just rang and her and Jack will be visiting in a minute. They always give me a lift and it will be lovely to see them.

More Medical Stuff

Hi Guys
I spent yesterday driving to see our good friends Ian and Paula down in Blandford. They are really good company and the drive allowed me to chill out somewhat and clear my head. I shall miss my uncle and it leaves me with the sobering thought that I am not that far behind in some ways, and need to sort things out for myself.

Whilst there we received news that our daughter Amanda had suffered a crush injury to her left hand. This was done on a boat between the Gunwale and the jetty. she had been admitted to Southampton General where she underwent and operation in the early hours of this morning. All is OK although at one time the doctors thought that she was going to lose her thumb. So she is now walking wounded and is looking forward to going home tomorrow. Maria and I will be picking her up when requested.

Alas, Alas, Alas.

I've just received the sad news that my Uncle Mike has passed away in hospital in Plymouth. He made his three score and ten and was diagnosed with lung cancer recently.

He was admitted to Derryford Hospital in Plymouth recently for a procedure. He there suffered a heart attack about a fortnight ago and although he seemed to be picking up; he appeared to have had another small one which was enough to tip the balance, and died peacefully in the early hours of this morning.

A reminder of just how frail we all are bloggers.

Another weekend Yeh!

I've not much to say because as noted previously all eyes ears and the spotlight is on the demise of Mr M Jackson.

As I predicted it has become a circus. Texts, mostly derogatory, have abounded over the airwaves. The net is clogged with stuff about him, the TV shows nothing else, (thank the lord for the DVD).

No mention hardly of the three children he leaves behind; just the music and the money - how shallow and tacky - your legacy wacky jacky! So sad eh? but such is our society today - the value of all and the worth of nothing.

For myself, the chemo went OK and I feel quite well. the steroids have lifted me and the feeling of tiredness has abated somewhat.

My intentions are to tootle round to Pompey to do a bit of business and end up in the Hong Kong Tea Bar for lunch.

Duck (homeless or not) with Ho-Fun Noodle, I feel, will be the order of the day.

Then, if all is still well, that will be followed by a trip to the New forest and Beyond, if the weather, (and me) hold out.

For the future my next move is a blood transfusion at Haslar next Tuesday, followed by another CT Scan a couple of weeks or so later, followed by a consultation at The QA.

Lots to report as much has happened in the last twenty four hours. I shall deal with this in two parts. Firstly my visit to Haslar and the delivery of the Chemotherapy went OK and I feel quite refreshed. I believe that this is due to the extra steroids.

This has all been chastened and put into perspective by the sad demise of Farrah Fawcett Majors at the age of 62 from this most terrible of diseases and I ask that you can pas a thought for her.

She was one of the icons of the eighties and I make no excuse for the amount of pictures of her . She meant a lot to many people. So farewell Charlies Angel may you be one for real.

Bins and breakfast

Quite a sad state if affairs when all you have to look forward to is whether the bins are domestic or recyclable. I need to get out more. However they were collected successfully and all is well.

We are awaiting the arrival of our friend Charlotte and her boy Jack for breakfast.

I hope they come soon as I'm starving, and can do justice to the full English - yessiree!

This will be followed by a bath and then a leisurely trip to RNH Haslar for the Chemo at lunch time.

This will be my last batch of chemo and this will be followed by an appraisal in about three or four weeks time after another CT Scan.

More on this later as nobody knows whats going on and where as Haslar closes in just over week.

The Efffects of Steroids

What a difference a day makes. I took the first batch of Steroids in readiness for today's Chemo, and have been awake nearly all night. Isn't that weird considering the tiredness of the last fortnight / ten days.

A complete opposite to what has been happening recently.

I had a phone call from an Emigre to Australia on Wednesday, it was Niki Linton, an old colleague from Fleetlands, enquiring after my health. It was lovely to hear from her and she asked me to remember her to those who knew her. She was a number cruncher in the shared finance centre and rolled her own baccy. As I say it was a lovely surprise and a humbling experience to know that those you least expect, are thinking of you - nice one!

The sofas haven't run out of Z's yet and I have tested the big one, which is just as full as the smaller. good oh! Well picked Maria.

Last Sunday our brother in law Simon, (who cycles for a hobby), and our daughter Amanda (who doesn't), completed the London to Brighton Cycle Ride.

Although the eveent was for the British Heart foundation the did it in aid of cancer charities, and Maria and I are both immensely proud of them. Especially so of Amanda as she is very much a novice in this arena - well done girl!

Mention must also be made of Charlie (our friend Kath's daughter) who cycled with them, and of whom we are equally proud. May you be personally proud of what you have all achieved because it is an amazing achievement. bless you all!

A side issue of the renewed vigour from the steroid intake was a visit to the Hong Kong Tea Bar which was outstanding.

Most of Friday, until today has been spent in the arms of Morpheus, apart from the visit to the consultant.

As I said on a previous post this time the chemo has knackered my Red Blood cells so I feel so tired all of the time.

The easiest way to reverse this is via a transfusion and I have been booked in to have two units next Tuesday

Sofa so Good

This post concerns the middle of last week. maria had been chatting about a replacement for the Chesterfield in the living room. I was reticent to buy a new one fro DFS etc as it could possibly only be used for a couple of months and end up being given away or down the tip. I felt different about the money spent on carpeting and decoration as that would be part of the house and would help sell it in best Anne Maurice style. with that in mind i would prefer to get a Good second hand one so that I wouldn't feel so anxious about the financial "hit". Maria agreed, so it was off for a tour of the second hand shops in the area.

We ended up in Portsmouth, in Fawcett road to be precise and as luck would have it found what Maria was looking for in the last shop of the day. A suite comprising two Chestnut/Chocolaty 3 and 2 seater brand new leather settees. They were 18" from floor to the top of the cushion, which makes for easy getting up from (our main criteria). We returned the next morning with some cash, and a deal was struck (Half what you would expect of DFS etc). Delivery was to be that very day (What a Service!), so It was hightail it home where our daughter Charmaine stood poised with her space van to remove the old suite, ably assisted by my nephews.

The new on arrived just before 1800 and looks fantastic! I tested the two seater for z's without delay and let me tell you its full of them - wow!

Drained and Exhausted

I'm sorry about the lack of correspondence but I've been tom dick again. Ive been in quite a lot of pain in my thighs and butt along with a feeling of great tiredness. In fact most of the last week or so has been spent sleeping. After seeing he consultant yesterday (Tuesday 23rd) it seems i am also anaemic. So its Chemo tomorrow and a Blood transfusion next Tuesday 30th.

I am otherwise OK and will try and fill you in as best I can as to the events of the last ten days.
I shall begin by telling you of the visit of my brothers Mark and Keith, and their boys Zak and Dean, who arrived on Saturday evening (13th). They sang for their supper and put in a new drain for me from outside of the kitchen to the manhole. The previous one kept blocking with dead soap powder and could only be cleared by rodding from the manhole end. I was able to do this previously but not in my present condition so it was best to fit a new drain with a bottle gully for ease of access and maintenance. The bits were expensive considering that they are plastic but it was still cheaper than a call out from Dyno-Rod et al.
They also took loads of gear down the tip for me which was another weight off of my mind.
They went back up north on friday morning and I look forward to their return.

Hope you all had a good weekend, and enjoyed Gosport's big day out!.

Our friend Charlotte managed to get away on her hols on Saturday morning - e viva Espania.

Later in the day my kin turned up about eight in the evening.

On Saturday Night Peter Viggers and Gosport got a mention on Have I Got News For You; Yes it was the Duck House again.

See I told you its well on the way to becoming a national heritage item!

Yesterday was was quite a lazy chill out sort of day. News from Charlotte that she had finally reached her destination having suffered a delay of nearly 24 hours. A visit to the egg man at the car bootie, in the morning was rewarded with the purchase of some double yolk eggs. These are somewhat of a rarity these days. We had them as part of a big boys breakfast and they were lush!

The boys went exploring / sightseeing in the afternoon and Maria and I went for a drive.

We ended up in West Quay Southampton, where we purchased a Chimenea and a big Parasol. This is part of the strategy to start eating out in the garden. The weather is conducive to it and Maria and Den have put in quite a lot of work out there and it looks lovely. with regard to my Diabetes - Barbecued meat (any Duck going spare?) and salad are most acceptable.

This one (see previous post) certainly got a lot of you talking which was my aim. (Good stuff!) The observations of those from other cultures are well documented on the treatment we mete to those in our society, regarded as vulnerable. We prefer to tuck them away in a home or institution rather than face up to many of the issues involved with keeping them within the "mainstream" of our society. Several of you enjoyed the article and I shall pen something similar on another topic in the future.

Wow as I said on my last posting it has certainly knocked me for six, and all I've done mostly since is sleep and rest and recover! There's lots been happening in the world at large and i shall tackle these wonderful issues in individual posts if I may?

My first subject is the Duck house and the news that our Local Champion of the Mallard community in Gosport Sir Peter Viggers intends to auction the same for charity.

Well say I, It seems to me that this turn of events will mean that someone else will be paying for it again; or have I missed something?

Also what is the charity involved?

It would seem that one would get the kudos whilst another foots the bill! Hmmmmmmmm! what do you think bloggers?

Having said all of that am I just being churlish when such an important architectural item deserves to be saved for the nation? It could sit in Walpole park ((Named for another Politician) , or indeed find a mooring in the carp pond at Fleetlands which could then be designated as a national heritage site. I favour the latter as a worthy memorial of all our local MP did for Fleetlands.

I would hope that some local worthy would start a fund to retain this gem both for the national heritage and within Gosport. Any Takers?

Wednesday blood sugars gonna drop?

I had a reasonable kip last night and managed about six hours before waking up at around half past three this morning.

I got up and composed my highbrow stuff, (I can cos I've been to Uni and got an Ology, Allegedly), for you at that time and then went for a lie down and a doze. I feel I have a bit more energy this morning though time will tell. as I've told some some of you the Chemo kicked in earlier this time so I expect things to return to to normal a bit sooner.

No sooner than you feel complacent you are brought back down to earth with a jolt.. My giblets have vigorously exploded once again with no warning and my dignity has evaporated.

Confront your demons

This post might seem a bit heavy on a philosophical level but bear with it all.

As you know I popped into work (Fleetlands) yesterday and whilst there was initially "blanked" by one of my colleagues as he didn't recognise me, due to my weight and hair loss (Chemotherapy). My retort was to say that if he kept up to date with my blog or better still visited me (He hasn't yet) then he would be in the know. Another colleague piped up that they have visited, so there!

On my way home I actually got to thinking about this and its now been more than one hundred and fifty days since my diagnosis and announcement at work of my condition. You may feel that a ratio of one visit in this period is fine (My other colleague did obviously) or you may feel that a bit bit more effort could be apparent.

I have lost count of the amount of guys I have met who have assured me that they will visit and then shoot through on me. It is not my intention to lambaste individuals here but provide some social comment in that maybe our society as a whole perhaps could do with greater scrutiny with regard to our attitudes to this.

Cancer is a touchy subject for many of us.

The statisticians tell us that at least one in three will be affected by it at some point in our lives, so many of us will come across it and need to deal with its effects either as a patient, carer, or supporter.

Although there are many areas of support, both on a practical and emotional level, available it is still incumbent upon the individual to provide the impetus for these supportive attributes.

Indeed many of us find the mention and the confrontation of Cancer both in our society and in our personal lives, as extremely uncomfortable. It reminds us of our own mortality and fallibility and stikes at the very core of our Psyche.

Again as a defence mechanism, if we refuse to confront this issue and others in this arena, then they will not affect us, so we will be safe. We like to justify our feelings and existence and feel good about ourselves; and the culture of "Being Busy "in Modern Britain tends to pigeonhole subjects In this way. Here then we can sub concsciously categorise our visits into this arena with clarity and succinctness into such as duty done or responsibility addressed, and once "a tick in the appropriate box is achieved" due to a successful visit or a donation to a street collection where we purchase, then wear, our ribbon, then the subject and the perpetrator's interaction and responsibility regarding it can be comfortably discharged with no further thought to the matter. Sorted!

On a personal note, I have have been shocked and surprised by the unsolicited messages, e mails and cards showing support. Many from people whom I did not expect, (they have been so very, very kind, and there can only be one reason for this - altruistic and unconditional love!).

Equally I Have been disappointed by the behaviour of some colleagues, friends, and family from whom I expected, perhaps, a bit more. (Again one visit in one hundred and fifty days provides an example).

Such is the fragility of the human nature and ego, bloggers. I realise that you do not visit or contact me due to the way I am or feel about all of this; but partly because of your own fears and worries on this subject . However referring back to the statistics maybe we surely need to revise our attitudes in this area. I have tried via this blog to keep as many of you as aware as is possible and hope that my style of text is both entertaining and at the same time informative, so that it still provides you with a clear message.

For what goes around comes around so they say and the emotional care aspect of all of this would be better placed by us taking responsibility for our thoughts and feelings, and returning them to the centre of our society again rather than them being comfortably outsourced to another area like McMillan or any of the other organisations, and thus forgotten.

So bloggers as I said at the beginning, my point for all of this was not to pick on individuals but to stimulate self questioning and awareness amongst you. Please examine yourself with regard to your stance and involvement to all of this and ask yourself those soul searching questions as to whether you are justifying your viewpoint on these issues.

Is it enough to wear your breast cancer awareness ribbon or should you get more involved, or at least more educated, with this subject, and your treatment of those for whom this is a part of everyday life.

Had a visitor lunchtime - James Sharp, always a pleasure James, never a chore. He is good company and he doesn't eat too many of the chocolate biscuits. It would be nice for others to visit and my next post is going to explore this in a bit more detail, ie as to why people don't come or feel they've done their bit.
I ended up sleeping most of the day bloggers but feel that i am improving. My blood sugars are slowly coming down so I'm moving in the right direction

Sleepy Saturday

I've spent most of the day sleeping as the steroids and chemo do their business. I feel pretty rough but its acceptable as I am expecting it, so to speak.

It means that hopefully, I will come out the other end of it a bit sooner. This time I have felt sick but my anti sickness meds have taken care of that hopefully. Apart from that all is OK

Just a quickie to let you know my state of play, as a lot of you have been asking, after my third batch of the new chemo:

General Feelings - like crap, very tired but at the same time excited and hopeful for the future.

Hair - still dropping out (no big deal though)

Weight - 91 Kilos - have lost another half a stone over the last three weeks.

Bowels - now under control (Imodium)

Sickness - Feeling it but not doing it (Pills)

Blood sugars - High - due to large steroid intake - Necessary to let the chemo bond, but detrimental to my overall feelings and health.

Chemo - good progress - in the right direction - confidence is high. The chemo is having a positive effect on things I feel.

Chemo Name - Docetaxel

A Turn out for the book!

The turn of human nature never ceases to amaze me. We talked recently about getting my new gas fire fitted and how the friend of a friend shot through on me.

Well today my second engaged friend of a friend came over and did the business. What a fine Job he made of it all.

My original friend came round to view the finished job and here's the twist. While she was here the original fitter (her friend) turned up out of the blue., with an I've been ill and lost my phone excuse.
Gall or Honesty? Either way the job has gone to someone else. They left shortly after, and I guess she was bending his ear all the way back to her house.

Barber queues or Barbie Queues

I thought I'd make a statement about that summer event we all love.

Cooking outside or the barbecue. this sometimes results in that special cuisine where the meat looks like and tastes like a charcoal briquette on the outside whilst still being raw or frozen in the middle. with a little knowledge we may be able to avoid this part of it all.

Firstly we need to establish what it is we are talking about:

This is a chicken barber queue

Whilst this is a Barbie Queue, albeit queueing for a BBQ.

The real thing is a barbecue or BBQ, and describes a method of cooking that we have come to know and love over here in the UK

The apparatus can be purchased from just about anywhere these days and can be Gas, wood, or charcoal powered and can be as simple or as complicated as you like. you can get one from any DIY store or from specialist shops such as the one below.

Once established, you now need something to cook and just about anything can be barbecued if you prepare right, even cheese (Haloumi).

Another great institution is the Marinade and / or Barbecue sauce. These can be bought ready prepared from any supermarket whilst a lot of guys nowadays prefer to make their own to their on "secret recipe".

Me I like to Jerk my Chicken (don't we all fellers?), and as I'm sure you already know bloggers jerking is a West Indian term for a hot spicy marinade and sauce.

All of these are best cooked over a low heat ie over a bed of charcoal when the flames have really died down as the sugar in the marinade tends to blacken and char too quickly otherwise, befor the meat has a chance to cook thoroughly.

That Friday feeling

Its Half past four in the morning and the dawn of a new day. Although I've lain on the bed I don't feel rested. So I feel that it is better to get up then toss and turn I suppose.

So a very good morning to you all! the sky looks clear around abouts so I think we are in for another lovely day down here in sunniest Hampshire.

There are those of you who will be starting another day at work, and a special hello to those who are starting a new day at Fleetlands.

Keep those cabs rolling guys you are doing a fantastic job and providing our Armed forces with great support and service.

I also want to send a special hello to my brother in law Simon who works at the Honda plant in Swindon. They have just gone back to work and good luck with finding a parking space!

Another special Hello goes to my bezzie chum Andy who flies back to Abu Dhabi for his next stint on an Oil Platform, good luck!

Changes Changes

Isn't it amazing how the mood of a day can change due to some news received. the hall stairs and landing paint job was progressing nicely and all was looking rosy in the garden! Then:

Up until mid Wednesday afternoon all was well when Maria received news that her Brother Angelo had been admitted to hospital in Swindon with a suspected heart attack.

So it was drop everything and hightail it up to Swindon as soon as we could.

As we were told; the key word was suspected, and he was in the process of undergoing tests when we arrived.

Busy Bees

What a Wednesday so far; three phone calls, and two visits before 0800. Fantastic!

Today is going to be busy I can feel it in my water. I feel good after yesterdays positives and it shows , but more importantly my wife Maria is a lot happier after yesterday's outcomes.My pal Al pitched up early and joined us in sampling the delights of one of Maria's sausage sarnies.

Maria popped out lunchtime to meet her old workmates for dinner. I think it's good for them to keep in touch like that, and gives her an interest outside of me and my condition. It also gives them a feeling of belonging which cant be bad these days.

The Men from Del Monte

Yesterday (Tuesday) was a mixed bag of positive outcomes. (The man from Del Monte - He say yes!)

But with a fantastic outcome. our trip to the consultant ended in a positive and upbeat not and the chemo will continue on Thursday. I'm really pleased as I was half expecting a knock back. It seems things are going reasonably well from both perspectives.

We also had a visit from a gas fitter who has taken fitting my fire on. I believe this one because of the old boy ex matelot network (friend of a friend). He's due to come on Friday - fingers xed.

Last night I went to lodge but had to retire hurt as the atmosphere was far too hot both in the temple and in the dining hall. Still it was good to get dressed up for and attend and to see my brothers in the lodge.

All in all a bloody good day!

The Glorious First of June

Yes a glorious date in our calendar, it being officially the first day of summer. Yesterday saw Lee on the Solent being the hottest place in the UK with a temperature of 26.2 degrees Celsius.

The most beautiful of days started with a visit to the car bootie where Maria managed to purchase a long mirror.

We were home in double quick time where Joy of joys my Uncle Chris turned up at 0830 just like he said he would - what a guy. He then proceeded to emulsion the ceilings and walls of the hall stairs and landing, and what a fantastic job he is making of it as well. I am really pleased after yesterdays let down by the gas man.

We also had some visitors this morning:

My good friend Kevin - top banana, followed by my equally esteemed chums Karl and Caroline and family. Their girls Hannah and Lucie are both a credit and delight to their parents and it was wonderful to see them.

We went out for a late lunch at the Buccaneer at the bottom of Gudge Heath Lane in Fareham. Typical Harvester but just what we needed nice one!
Home for a nap in front of the telly.

The title of this post says it all for me, which as you can guess I have been let down by someone.

My Gas bloke shot through on me and then went deep undercover not answering his phone etc. Honestly all he had to do was call me and re-arrange a new date, but this stance he has adopted is so unprofessional. I really don't know what to make of it all. I stayed and waited for most of the day, when I could have got on with other things.

So anybody know of a gas fitter who can fit my fire and provide me with a certificate please let me know.

Luckily my good pal Andy came and sorted out my new light fittings in the Cludgie which restored my faith in human nature a little - Thanks Andy!

Slow progress on the fire surround, but the commitee of taste is pleased so all is well.

I managed to spend a better nights sleep than I had done recently. Whether this was due to the painkillers or the fact I slept in a softer bed I don't know, I'm just grateful that's all. The perils of having a boney bum eh?

The sun is shining and my first job is to progress with glueing the next section of the fire surround. It'll be dry by early afternoon and I can then assemble it all ready for staining and waxing to match the rest of the woodwork in the lounge. Maria will be providing me withh assistance in between her "potching" around the garden which is starting to look lovely by the way.

I have a chap coming to sort the fire out, hopefully this morning, and more importantly provide me with a certificate; so it's looking good on the fire front .

This is just as well as the weatherman predicts a cold spell for next week, so we shall wait and see.

New life

Hi Guys

Went to the doctor this morning to have my pains checked out. He prescribed me some stronger painkillers (Cocodomol) to be taken as and when and warned me of their side effects - constipation.

Hopefully they'll work against the effects of the chemo then. Meanwhile I have got softer cushions under my bum when I sit.

Much the same lifestyle as for sufferers with Chalfonts.

Maria tootled down to the forest to catch up on her physio at the Gym and stopped for tea with our daughter Amanda. Me I cooked a chilli for our supper.

Later in the afternoon I popped round the corner, to see my chum Maggie and her new (and first) Grand daughter Maisie-Ann. She is three days old and is so beautiful! The creation of new life is such a wonderful gift and is to be treasured.

Harry homers afterwards to catch up on the news from PFC in the evening paper.

Wow exciting stuff eh?

Hope it all comes off bloggers. Harry Redknapp must be kicking himself.

I see on this evening's news that there may be a satisfactory conclusion up the road. I hope so because they deserve more than certain people in charge delivered in the recent past.

My achy breaky bones

I had another terrible night with pain in my pelvis and thigh bone. This time I had painkillers and a heat pad.

Boy those things are good but still an underlying ache persisted. I slept in the back bedroom, which, for those of you who have ever stopped with me know that the bed is like a big marshmallow. This managed to do the trick, and I was able to pump out a few Z's. Six hours later and the heat pad is still hot / warm - Good stuff!

Quite a productive day yesterday (Thursday). My Daughter Charmaine came with my Grandson Chris and took some clutter to the tip. Maria did some gardening and I progressed the fire surround, albeit very slowly. Regarding the woodworking front, on the one hand I am pleased that I am still able to perform, but frustrated at the rate at which I can perform. Still slow but sure eh?

The plastering is drying out nicely and evenly and should be ready for its first coat of paint over the weekend.It looks great and the fact that it is now all one colour - ish helps a lot.

So more of the same for today bloggers. Friday afternoon is normally busy with visitors, and today i might at last be able to receive them in the garden if the weather holds.

A Pain in the Ar*e

Sorry about being a bit late with this entry as I had a terrible night's sleep. I was very uncomfortable due to (or is it owing to?) a pain in my left thigh / pelvis.

The problem stems from where I have very little meat on my bones, My bum is a similar size to that of an Argentine gigolo, which means that I don't have enough padding to cushion the rest of me.

This in turn means that when sitting , or lying, undue pressure is brought to bear on my bones which last night hurt like billio. So I managed to sleep only in fits and starts.

Changing the subject here I said to my good friend Karl that i would give him a mention.

He is a member of our Britannic Majesty's Navy and is currently at sea protecting our nation's interests.

So to him and all on the starship Edinburgh - God Bless you all!

Again on a nautical theme - the last ship in the navy to play an active role in the Falklands campaign paid off in Pompey yesterday - HMS Exeter.

You could always recognise her because of the blue boot topping (The strip round the waterline).

Good news on the temporal front. The Shaguar is now tip top, and you can't half tell the difference with new shocks are fitted - nice one!

Shocking Conclusions

Today concludes the treatment for the Shaguar at Jagcare, where the rear shocks and bushes are being replaced.

It is drying out well and looks fantastic. I am very pleased with all that is going on and the progress of it all.

Maria spent yesterday (Tuesday) in Hythe where she sorted out a lot of Admin. She is now "officially" Maria Tinkler, as her passport and bank etc now say so. All that is missing is her driving licence and she has just sent off for that on receipt of her passport.

The power of the Jungle Telegraph

As I said in a previous posting i bumped into my old sea pal Geoff on Monday and within 24 hours I had some other guys from my time on the "Fighting G" contact me and a visit from my pal Al and his wife Karen to boot. Fantastic. The power of the jungle telegraph eh?

Yesterday afternoon was very busy (Piccadilly Circus) but very enjoyable at the same time.

My visitors included: My daughter Charmaine and the twins, followed by Barry and Annie, (looking good girl!), and as I said Al and Karen and then later in the day Richard and Caroline.

All of this against a backdrop of getting upstairs plastered. The plastering has gone well, by the way, and they will return today (Wednesday) to complete.

Richard very kindly took the radiator off of the wall in the hall for me in preparation for tomorrows bout of plastering, whilst Caroline and I walked around the playing field in Nobes Avenue as my feet were beginning to swell through being sat down for most of the day.

All operations went well and Caroline provided me with cheese on toast and a cuppa on our return - outstanding!

Getting Plastered

Last night saw us having dinner with our good friend Jenny before she flies back to OZ. we went to the Coach house ( Ex North Star) for the carvery and it was lush. What I like about it is that you are eating within five minutes of getting there.

Today (Tuesday) sees the arrival of the plasterers for our hall, stairs, and landing.

Bank Holiday Booty (Part Two)

Well I managed to negotiate the booty in one hit (luckily there weren't so many stalls). The Egg man was there and a tray of eggs were purchased - Check him out - the eggs are extremely fresh and are fantastic!.

I saw two pals from yester-year this morning - Cheryl from Fleetlands, and Geoff from the Andrew.

Neither were aware of my condition (nor were likely to be really) and were quite shocked when I put them in the picture. It was lovely to see them and never ceases to amaze me how many other people's lives we touch. Welcome as a blog follower Cheryl!

Looking later on, I saw that today I had some comments and enquiries both here and on Facebook as my name had been passed on. You cannot beat the old Jungle telegraph eh?

I began the woodworking in the afternoon as the sun decided to make a re-appearance, and was surprised how quickly I got tired. For the last three days my blood sugars have been hovering around the 14-15 mark which I'm happy with as they are reasonably steady.

I spent a night of neither here nor there as I've started coughing up a little Phlegm as I become weaned off the daily steroid dosage.

My sputum is starting to show traces of pink. (Capillary blood as opposed to Venal). However the "frog" in my throat has gone so I'm not sure whether I have improved or not?

As the chemo (Docetaxel) attacks the tumours little bits sometimes break away and I believe that it is the small amount of bleeding from this that is the cause of my symptom.

This morning (Saturday) saw the early arrival Of Charlotte and Jack and the disappearance down to Gosport of them and Maria shopping.

This was good as I had arranged for my old fireplace to be ripped out and replaced, and so had a free space to do it in. The removal was performed by my pal Kevin and the replacement hearth and "backdrop?" were set and fixed by my chum Wayne.

It looks good so far although I have to make a new surround as the old one is just (and I mean a couple of inches) too small. As in many matters an inch can mean a lot. So there you are bloggers!

Over the course of the afternoon I managed to engage a (Corgi) gas fitter to fit the new fire and he is coming next Saturday hopefully. this is a legal requirement now and he will issue a certificate for the the Home seller's Pack. Jobs a goodun!

All in all a good day (Apart from having to watch Britain's got talent in the evening.)

I got up Friday morning feeling relatively good, and a quick check on my blood sugars showed likewise.

I popped into work to attend to to some paperwork and was able to take the time to talk to colleagues, which was lovely. You'll never guess what the overriding topic of conversation was with every person I met?

Well OK then, MP's Expenses - especially our local one. Why have there been no police interviews or pending prosecutions for these people?

You could imagine what would be said when up before the beak eh? I didn't realise what was happening M'llard! (Boom! Boom!)

Where has contrition or shame disappeared to?

Is our resident MP now considered to be a political lame duck? (Geddit?)

These people in parliament are still oblivious as to the depth of public outrage over this issue; and it will continue to be a big issue until a change in MP's attitudes is sensed.

The pigs are now taxi-ing down the runway, (apart from those whose noses are still stuck in the trough, or who are in bed with flu).

Needless to say my HR enquiry as to Vector funding a new rabbit hutch at my sisters in Middlesbrough didn't get past the first hurdle.

Friday afternoon saw a stream of visitors as usual - love you all! To those who haven't been yet come on round!

I'm really looking forward to today. We have swordfish lined up for our lunch and my brother Mark's coming down with his boy Zak for the weekend, Nice one!

I had lunch at the Seahorse in Gomer yesterday with my bessy pal Andy who is home from Abu Dhabi. We had a home made chicken, mushroom, and bacon pie with proper veggies, and it was lush. Fantastic food and the service and welcome is outstanding!

Yesterday (Thursday) was concerned mainly with the Shaguar.

How about this bloggers, as I receive Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate under the special rules (terminal patients) I qualify for an Exemption for the Road fund licence - Kushti!

I've just found out about it and applied - nice one!

My pain levels have increased a bit due to being weaned of my daily dose of anti inflammatory steroids so I've gone up to three times a day on that one. Although it's only Paracetamol, it seems to have done the trick. Just enough to take the edge off of things.

Mallard in Gosport - A Special Report

I had some visitors yesterday, the first being Charley and her son Jack - always a pleasure.

You know guys you are more than welcome to visit and lunchtime is a good time. A visit of twenty mins to half an hour with tea, or coffee and a trip to the chocolate biscuit barrel thrown in. Can't be bad eh? and it doesn't impinge on your work time! Don't be a stranger as it will be lovely to see you!

Early evening saw my good friend Andy turn up - hes just got back from Abu Dhabi (lucky git!) along with my Uncle and Auntie, Lyn and Chris.

However I couldn't give them the attention I felt they deserved as I fell asleep knackered.

Such is the call of friendship that we as humans do some quite strange things in its name.

Yesterday was no exception. In all all that inclement weather we had told our good friends Ian and Paula that we would be there for dinner.

The problem is that they live in Blandford, however come hell or high water we would make it there. As you know it was more high water on sunday, as the weather here was horrendous.

On the motorway between Hedge end and Eastleigh there were two big accidents, one with a car on its roof! We had a major think about calling off the trip.

However by the time we got to the other side of Southampton the inclement weather had cleared.

Yesterday involved having a bit of a wander round Fareham. nice and mild weather wise and not too busy. Bumped into a couple of colleagues from Fleetlands (difficult not to) and went to see me old mucker Pete Slade a la Tattooist at P.K's Body Piercing & Tattoo Studio.

No I didn't get any additions but did get my ears pierced .

Ive spent a lot of my life being responsible and now I feel I can be a little bit more me. So there you are.

Supper was courtesy of the Hong Kong Tea Bar and although it was up to its usual standard it tasted crap which was down to me and the side effects of the chemo and steroids sadly. So I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked.

As you can seen sleep is remaining elusive so its off to the bathroom for a shave methinks.

My facial hair is very sparse due to the chemo so its better that it comes off I think.

It'll give Maria and Daisy the dog a shock when they wake up if nothing else. My hair on my head looks better as its not so sparse yet so that can stay for the while.

I had a chat with the chemo nurse on Thursday last and she warned me that my eyebrows and eyelashes were on dodgy ground too.

How right she was.

Also certain people find their nails go soft and fall out so be careful about washing the dishes; well Maria and I looked at each other and laughed at that one.

I have also found that all my food tastes terrible even though it smells lovely and I fancy it.

I have found myself not eating a lot at the moment. Hopefully that feeling will pass as the days progress. If not its "force feeding" as I realise you have to put food in to provide fuel to fight the good fight.

They reckon use a bit more herbs and spices on things you like to enhance the taste. We'll see how it goes (Curried Ice cream?).

I took my latest sick note into work this morning ( Friday) and took the slow route in and out so that I was able to meet and chat with as many colleagues as possible.

I started with Mr John Hawe's who was elated that Argyle have escaped the drop this season - Good old Guzz! Oggie, Oggie, Oggie!

This was followed by those in the Training Centre - all extremely busy I might add as they were either conducting, or were about to conduct, interviews for this years potential Apprentice Intake.

Home via C Shop - again good to see the guys. I arrived home for breakfast only two hours late.

My Very good chums Mr and Mrs John and Sue Keenan arrived early afternoon with his clippers and gave me a number1 all over.

My head looks OK but the beard looks non existent so it will come off quite soon.

Sue produced Shaving foam and a packet containing a razor.

A Gillette mach three turbo to be precise, for the execution of the task.

Just as well really as I haven't shaved for twenty years or so, and wouldn't know the best one to get, and aren't they dear guys?

Still you get what you pay for i suppose. How long does a blade last? Comments please.

I checked the prices of the blades in ASDA and on E bay, the latter being a good option. Still it will be good for my fizzog to see the light of day.

Managed to sneak in a small nap followed by taking my steroids a lot earlier in the day so maybe tonight I will manage some sleep.

Hi to you all .

Well we've arrived at the end of the week and for me its the weak rather than week. this chemo is quite strong i feel and its making me quite tired.

The fact that the steroids have kept me awake hasn't helped either. I managed to get some shut eye around 0200 this morning but was wide awake (but tired ) By 0500 hence the early entries here bloggers.

I have decided to have my hair cut really short as it is falling out thick and fast. a weird choice of metaphor as it should be thin and fast surely?

Anyhow I feel that short and even will look better than patchy.

Another weak passes

and firstly a big welcome to my latest blog follower - my cousin Kim. We have lots to catch up on.

As I said last post (yes yes yes I know not THE last post!) it was time, yesterday, for another session of Chemo.

All went well but boy did it burn when going in - I could feel every drop.

I stripped as much as I could decency allowing but still needed a fan on me to try and cool me down.

(Diabetes had a big part to play in this methinks)

Blood sugar

Yesterday (Wednesday) saw my prep for the next session of chemo. This involved a large intake of steroids and boy did my body get whacked by them.

My blood sugars soared compared with normal and I recognised the start of several recurrent symptoms such as "fizzy wellingtons"; in the commensurate with three weeks ago prior to treating me for diabetes.

So there's definitely a link, although I was able to pre-empt the severity of some of them by a stricter dietary regimen.

A nice touch later in the day (wednesday) was that I and some other members of my Masonic Lodge went for a photo shooot at the Harbour Cancer Support Centre

at the bus station in gosport concerning a recent donation we had made to them

The welcome was as usual fantastic.
What a place and what a lovely bunch of volunteer staff - Priceless!

This afternoon provides me with another session of chemo at Haslar Hospital. What a shame and disgrace that the government are choosing to close it.

My future choices will be the War Memorial at Gosport (don't take the painkillers) or the QA (make them wash their hands twice) over at Cosham. Cynical Moi?

My hair is continuing to fall out at an ever increasing rate (or so it seems) however albeit not as painful as ladies pay for at a salon eh chaps?

Consultancy news

Hi Guys
As you know Maria and I saw the consultant today and the news is fairly promising.

The latest x ray shows no change in the tumours, which bodes well.

The picture on the right is similar to my x ray, the lumpy shape to the right of centre being the heart.

I must admit I was a bit worried as I've developed this cold thing.

My control of my blood sugars is working albeit slowly so its full steam ahead with the next tranche of treatment.

The only changes in my medication are that my steroid intake has been reduced again. As these were prescribed for anti inflammatory and the first stage of reduction to wean me off of them has perhaps resulted in a cold. I feel a bit peeved as i had the flu jab as soon as I was diagnosed.

Ah well some things you've just got to accept.

There's nothing to snap you back to reality than what's just happened to me.

My hair is starting to fall out. Yes I know that's generally part of my genetic make up and age but this is due to the chemo. It's not coming out in clumps but more of an accelerated thinning process

Yesterday (Sunday) was a good day for the following reasons:

Firstly I got away from the booty buying only eggs and strawberries;

and that was dwarfed by my winning a tenner on the lottery, Hooray!

On a down note i seem to have developed a cold or something like it .

The good thing about car booties is that they are full of "stuff" you desperately need but never knew you did - fantastic! It's amazing what people will pay good money for nowadays for "stuff" that you used to take down the tip.

As a sociological observation, I feel we spend the first half of our lives trying to amass as much "stuff" as possible and the latter years trying to get rid of it .

Hi Blogsters and fellow facebook afficianados.

As you can see I have returned from Swindon safe and sound and have tried to get to grips with Facebook. applications to be my friend have come in thick and fast so I still don't know what it's all about yet. I probably need a teenager to explain it to me.

As far as I can make out it's just a computer based text and look at my photo service, with some elements of MSN thrown in. Still I will get to grips with it.

Medical wise my blood sugars are slowly decreasing and I have more energy. My feet swell from time to time and this eases off by walking for which you need the energy. I feel and look a lot better than I have done for a while.

The easing off of the steroids is going well, however as they were used for anti-inflammatory I am now and then experiencing a bit of pain in both lungs, for which I am managing with Paracetamol and some other painkiller whose name escapes me for the moment (smally orange pill).

This is your roving reporter bringing this post live from Swindon, this Thursday Morn. I'd like to say sunny Swindon but the weather is dull with very fine rain like sea fret. Still its great to be here and great to be alive

Yesterday we met up with Maria's Aunties and took them for lunch at the Dockle Farmhouse pub (see earlier post) and very nice it was too.

Today sees us visiting one of Maria's friends from her schooldays and again lunch may be in the offing. As i said earliier I quite like Swndon, don't know why but I do.

Bank Holiday weekend

Sorry about the lack of blog but I had family down and opted for a weekend of gay abandon and chilling out.

My brother Mark and his son Zak made the great trek south and a good weekend was had by all.

On Sunday evemning Maria received a phone call from her Auntie June in Australia (but she wasn't! - she was in the UK), what a nice suprise. We will be off to Swindon in the near future me thinks.

Monday saw our visitors leave and was crowned by a visit to the Hong Kong Tea Bar (hooray!).

Tuesday saw Maria celebrate her birthday, and another good day was had by all.she ended up awash with pressies and cards - nice one .
The children did her proud and took her out for dinne,r and the pressie was amazing - a tour of Kensington Palace followed by a champagne tea there - Fantastic!

Thursday proved to be a busy but enjoyable day.

My blood sugar levels are receding generally and that is cause for celebration.

With my new found energy we hightailed to the supermarket to stock up on new types of food.

There's nothing I can't eat being Diabetic, however on certain processed foods, you need to discern between them as they contain varying amounts of sugars, carbohydrates etc.

I'll tell you this it makes a big difference to me in waking up feeling refreshed. Since I stopped caning and watched my sugar intake I feel so much better.

I honestly thought that the tiredness was due to the chemo however; some of it may well have been due to diabetes.

Yesterday (Wednesday) was a day of appointments, and ended up quite busy,

My first was with the PMO in Fleetlands. I was chauffeured by Tom Money (VMT Tom) and was able to meet a few of the guys whilst I was there - Fantastic!

From there I had to hot foot it to Gregson Surgery for my date with the Diabetic Nursie.

Phoebe has just returned from a visit to Australia with her Nan and regaled me with her news and photos etc - Fantastic. why we all stay in the UK is beyond me.

I was too young for the £10 pommie scheme in the late 60's and early 70's otherwise who knows?

Maria returned late evening with a freshly sharpened and laundered head, and clutching a rake of diabetic cookbooks.

This post is all about the celebrated Welsh Sugar Magnate Dai Beeties and his role in my life. As I said in the last post (No not THE Last Post, hopefully that's some way off), a chance remark to the nurse about drinking and peeing for England prior to chemo, set off all sorts of consternation.

In no time at all my consultant was at my bedside.

What's going on?

My blood sugar levels, which should be between 4 and 7 were off the scale.

I must admit that I couldn't see what the fuss was about as I had never made any secret of the fact and regarded my drinking and peeing as "normal". (How wrong can you be?) and dropped off to sleep as I was tired.

Well apparently a lot of the tiredness would be due to diabetes rather than Chemo possibly, which would explain a lot. If you look at the symptoms via the link some are uncannily similar to those for cancer.

I was admitted to St Mary's Hospital as an emergency after having had the chemo session.

This was for the medicos to try and stabilise my blood sugar, and I was connected to an insulin drip. my "score" by this time was 29, which as those in the know appreciate is way too high.

Most people know that too low a blood sugar level can cause a coma which can be offset by eating a sweet or sugary biscuit, but what if it is too high?

The risk is greater for stroke, heart atttack etc, along with other complications. The list is scary!

I had used up the third of my nine lives, without realising it.

So an enforced stay in Hospital whilst they tried to stabilise my sugar levels. during this time I noticed a direct correlation between my steroid use and rising levels each day which prompted another question as to why I am on them?. Medical Mysteries Huh?

I escaped on Monday night albeit still not "right but better than i was the previous Thursday.

I was placed into the care of my wife who is all about on the condition as she is a type 2 diabetic herself. i have an appointment with the diabetic nurse at my local surgery fixed up (how cool is that? The system works!) on Wednesday 29th. So until then its watch what I eat and keep a note of my sugar levels, which are coming down albeit very slowly.

More later guys when I've read up on this a bit more.

and like the proverbial cat I have used up another of my nine lives, for reasons explained below: (Check this cat out - two faced!)

I'll begin by talking about the new Chemo regime, as a lot of of people have rung me confused as to my prognosis, thinking "That's It It's all over!"

Well let me state here and now that it is NOT!.

In my last post I stated that the chemo hasn't worked and this is true.

HOWEVER: all is not doom and gloom as I have embarked on a new treatment cycle with a different chemical, Docetaxel (Taxotere®) which has had good results. Some things work for you and some things work for others.

A chance remark to the nurse about thirst etc prompted her to check my blood sugar levels.

They were off the scale, and all sorts of consternation broke loose.

Visiting wednesday

It would be remiss of me here not to mention the visitors who came on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday.

Tuesday afternoon was Kevin, Lisa and Family. thanks for mowing the Lawn Carolanne.

Wednesday morning saw the arrival of Charlotte and Jack followed by Richard from Sussex. Then at lunchtime Tom from Fleetlands came (I could talk to him all day - lovely bloke) followed by Maggie. Mid-afternoon saw our good friends Barry and Anne. Anne has Emphysema and knows how I feel.
Early evening saw the return of Maggie followed by Richard {again} and his partner Caroline, who had been on a training course in portsmouth.

A very busy but enjoyable day.

Resulting Consulting

Hi Guys

We saw, as I said earlier, the consultant this Tuesday morning and received a mixed bag of results.
So here goes:

I felt that I had improved as my constant cough had gone and my breathing was a bit easier. My weight has stabilised as I have only lost 0.1 of a kilo over the last 3 weeks.

However the CT scan showed otherwise.

The chemotherapy has not worked.

My tumours have grown, including the small ones in my right lung.

I also have some appearing in my lymph system. (body drains)

However things are not painted as black as they first seem. I still have options, and they are:

1. Do nothing and let the condition take its course. THIS IS NOT AN OPTION FOR ME AT THIS TIME!

2. Radiotherapy - useful for my Starboard Lung but preferred by the consultant to be kept in reserve for later. Promising (when reading between the lines?)

3 More chemotherapy but with a different chemical and dosage rate.

I have signed up for option 3, (you knew I would didn't you?), and receive my first dose this afternoon (Thursday)

Again, like before, it consists of four x three week modules which are constructed as follows:

Week One:

Day one - Heavy duty Steroids. Day two - Chemotherapy

Weeks Two and Three - Respite

I have gleaned rightly or wrongly the following information from all of this:

1. He still expects me to be alive at the end of the chemotherapy treatment (Hooray!) (Imagination plays on your mind something terrible at times)

2. The chemo is much stronger than previously and will have greater side effects, for which i will wait and see.

So there you have it as I do - Chapter and Verse.

A friend put it into a perspective by saying that as the treatment is NHS you get the cheap stuff first. Now this may work for Eight out of ten patients but for the two for whom it does not you need the more expensive stuff!

Consulting the Oracle

Sorry about the delay but i have had a lot to take in recently.

Tuesday saw the preparations for seeing the consultant, and involved getting a blood test and Chest x ray to add to the results of the CT Scan taken on Easter Monday.

Maria and I arrived at the phlebotomists before opening time (0830) and were amazed at the queue that was already there. Germans and sunbeds came to mind.

As the doors opened it was like a mad rush at the sales for the ticket machine. apparently the machine was out side the section at one time but people were coming down in the evening to obtain an advantaged ticket, so hey moved it inside. It does sound like zer German zunbed action ya?

Any how we got in to find the number in progress was 93 and my ticket was.....

I've kept it as I believe it to be an omen for all you ex naval chappies B13. At last as an ex tiff I've finally got one - Ha - Ha!

Off for the chest x-ray in the meantime - straight in and out - much better

We saw the consultant who gave a mixed bag of news so I think its best for the sake of clarity and to reduce confusion, to deal with that in a new Post.

Catching up after being away

Hi guys
Just a short one to keep you up to speed.

We spent Friday and Saturday in Swindon with Tina and Simon.
We returned to Hythe Saturday evening, with our niece Kira who had spent the week at Tina's with her cousins after our wedding. As it was getting late we stopped at Maria's flat.

We spent the next day (Sunday) touring the Garden centres for hanging basket plants etc, in the forest as it was a beautiful day. We had lunch out and called in at my aunt and uncle's in Hedge End on the way home. A wonderful day!

Monday saw the utilising of our purchases by Maria, I'm pleased as she gets such joy (and therapeutic value?) from gardening, and again it was a beautiful day!

Le Day Trip

Morning bloggers and bloggerettes

Were off to maria's sisters in Swindon for the day. Its nearly 8 o'clock and the sun is shining so we should have a lovely time.

It's about sixty five miles away so is close to hand should anything untoward happen. Not that I'm expecting any thing, although it may be prudent here to remind you and my self of my condition.

My weight: 14stone 7lb

Arms and legs: Still skinny

My breathing: I've developed a wheeze although coughing is minimal

Strength: Generally tired and weak with a need to pace myself, as i get out of breath quickly.

Bloods: OK

Hair Loss: No more than normal, although the growing of has been restricted.

Sense of humour: Still bad assed!

Lust for Life: ENORMOUS!
